Voor een toeschouwer begint het publiek doorgaans pas te leven als hij er last van krijgt. Zo trekt het kuchen en hoesten soms als een hyperbesmettelijk virus door een zaal. Dan weer zijn er bezoekers die luid lachen om iets dat volgens mij vooral pijnlijk is. Een goed publiek is in deze optiek een onzichtbaar publiek. De andere bezoekers mogen de illusie niet doorbreken dat de acteurs alleen voor mij spelen. Het licht in de zaal is niet voor niets uit.
Recentelijk heb ik twee voorstellingen gezien waar op een bijzondere manier werd afgerekend met dit ideaal. Bij de slotavond van Tam Tam, het festival dat de Stadsschouwburg, de Melkweg en de Toneelgroep Amsterdam in februari organiseerde, was het publiek bij de voorstelling van Carmen allerminst onzichtbaar en onhoorbaar. Een zekere Erik, die naast mij stond, vond het volstrekt normaal om zijn mobiele telefoon te beantwoorden. “Met Erik….in de schouwburg…ik ben in de stadsschouwburg!” Een stel voor mij werd door Carmen geïnspireerd om elkaar eens lekker af te lebberen. Het maakte van de voorstelling een popconcert. Vreemd genoeg stoorde me dat helemaal niet. Integendeel. Van songteksten kun je genieten, zonder dat je alle regels verstaat. Bij een concert word je meer verleid door de overgave van de muzikanten, dan door hun raffinement. Dat was precies de kracht van deze Carmen-cast. Hier was ritme belangrijker dan diepgang. Het rumoer in de zaal versterkte dat gevoel. Alleen als het stuk vroeg om een betekenisvolle stilte, werd de setting een corset. Hoe kan de stilte snijdend zijn, als de bastonen uit de andere zaal kwistig doordreunen? Terwijl niets zo veelzeggend is als een mooie stilte.
De andere voorstelling was een spiegelbeeldige ervaring. In de stadsschouwburg bezocht ik het toneelbordeel van de Toneelgroep Amsterdam, een ander programma van TamTam. Om zes uur ’s middags werd ik ontvangen in een roodverlichte bar. Daar kon je je inschrijven voor privé-voorstellingen. Zo mocht ik luisteren naar een prachtige monoloog van Hugo Koolschijn over zijn theatrale leermeester. Acteur en toeschouwer werden door niet meer gescheiden dan een goedkope formica tafel. Deze opstelling verandert radicaal de manier waarop je kijkt. Vooral als hij een stilte liet vallen was dat zonneklaar. Ik voelde een enorme drang om non-verbaal terug te praten, door met een knik of een glimlach mijn instemming te betuigen. Het maakt dat je je als toeschouwer extreem bewust wordt van je eigen aanwezigheid. Dat is vervelend en spannend tegelijk.
Waar komt dat verlangen vandaan om als toeschouwer onzichtbaar te zijn en van je medebezoekers hetzelfde te eisen? Bij naturalistische films kan ik me dat voorstellen. Ze beogen je mee te voeren. Weg van het hier en nu. Zelfbewustzijn is dan een barrière voor de gewenste identificatie. De aantrekkelijkheid van toneel is daarentegen dat het nooit vanzelfspreekt. De constructie, de interpretatie is immer zichtbaar. Het is voelen en denken tegelijk. Die reflexiviteit zou juist gevoed moeten worden door het gevoel dat je jezelf ziet kijken.
De bedoeling van Tam-tam was dat er een ander publiek zou komen, of dat is gelukt weet ik niet. Maar in ieder geval speelde het publiek wel een andere rol. Of beter. Misschien speelde het publiek voor het eerst een rol, omdat het toeschouwers als ik niet was toegestaan om te vluchten in groep anonieme bezoekers.
