Drie dagen is het stil in groep 8 van de basisschool. De leerlingen moeten tweehonderdnegentig vragen beantwoorden over rekenen, taal, studievaardigheden en wereldoriëntatie. Maar veel leerlingen uit groep acht doen niet mee. De school verwacht dat zij zo slecht scoren dat het geen enkele zin heeft om ze vragen voor te schotelen die ze niet kunnen beantwoorden. Het zijn kinderen met een gebrekkige intelligentie, concentratieproblemen of een forse taalachterstand. Het zijn kinderen die deze column niet kunnen lezen en begrijpen. In Amsterdam-West neemt één op de drie jongeren van Marokkaanse afkomst niet deel aan de citotoets. Deze kinderen gaan naar een praktijkschool of volgen op het vmbo een basisberoepsgerichte opleiding. De kans dat zij een startkwalificatie halen, het niveau dat volgens het kabinet minimaal vereist is om op de arbeidsmarkt te kunnen concurreren, is uitermate klein. Gevangenis Voor een project ben ik eens met vier jongeren van een praktijkschool door Amsterdam-Slotervaart getrokken, de buurt waar ze woonden en naar school gingen. Hij probeerde mij wijs te maken dat hij al met verschillende meisjes naar bed was geweest. Toen ik ze vroeg of ze dachten dat ze over tien jaar nog in de buurt zouden wonen, antwoordde één van hen dat hij over tien jaar in de gevangenis zou zitten. Een grapje natuurlijk, maar niet om te lachen. De jongens wilden mij doen geloven dat hun leven draaide om seks en criminaliteit. Dat hun leven eerder in het teken stond van een uitzichtloze opleiding en strenge ouders was natuurlijk geen leuk verhaal. Bij een andere discussie met jongeren op het vmbo sloeg een jongen de spijker op de kop: “Waarom zou ik mijn best doen als het diploma dat ik op het einde van mijn opleiding kan krijgen nog steeds waardeloos is?” Leerlingen zijn net gewone mensen. Ze vinden het niet leuk om te falen en dus zijn ze geneigd om weinig energie te steken in dingen die toch niet lukken. Ze hebben het beeld dat ze niet kunnen leren allang verinnerlijkt. Waar haal je dan nog de motivatie vandaan om ondanks alles zo hoog mogelijk te reiken? Waar haal je de motivatie vandaan om je voor school uit te sloven? Want als kinderen extreem laag scoren is de boodschap even desastreus als wanneer ze niet mee mogen doen. De opdracht is om ook deze zorgleerlingen een toekomst te bieden. We moeten zorgen dat alle kansarme kinderen vroeg- en voorschoolse educatie krijgen. Er moeten veel meer schakelklassen komen om kinderen met een taalachterstand bij te spijkeren, zodat ze in ieder geval de leerboeken kunnen lezen als ze naar de middelbare school gaan. We moeten ophouden om alle kinderen met problemen bij elkaar in de klas te dumpen. Als we kinderen van twaalf afschrijven, zijn zij niet mislukt, maar is ons onderwijs een mislukking. |
