Hoe meer bedrijven hun producten versieren met een idealistisch sausje, hoe meer consumenten belang gaan hechten aan het milieu of de gezondheid van arme kinderen. En hoe belangrijker consumenten dat vinden, hoe lucratiever het weer is voor bedrijven om daar op in te spelen. De ironie is dat zelfs als de bedrijven vanuit puur winstbejag zich hun idealistische kant tonen dat idealisme steeds belangrijker wordt. Hypocriet idealisme is uitermate reëel in zijn consequenties. De aktievoerders vinden dat de bedrijven vals spelen met hun reclames. Maar ze moeten die mooipraterij niet aanklagen, maar aanmoedigen. Juist door reclame te maken voor een betere wereld worden bedrijven kwetsbaar. Hoe meer bedrijven het belang bezingen van een beter milieu hoe moeilijker ze hun praktijk van vervuiling kunnen verkopen. Hoe meer ze geïnvesteerd hebben in een groen of kindvriendelijk imago, hoe groter de reputatieschade als ze zich niet aan hun eigen mooie woorden houden.
