“Ik ben voorbij het medelijden geraakt,’ zegt Jan Blom, een Nederlandse officier in de voorstelling mighty Society6 die afgelopen week in Frascati in première ging. De missie in Afghanistan waarvan hij deel uitmaakt, is hopeloos ontspoord. Bij een luchtaanval is een bruiloft gebombardeerd. Vrouwen en kinderen zijn gesneuveld. Als represaille zijn tien Nederlandse soldaten vermoord. Hun kelen zijn doorgesneden en ze zijn gehuld in vrouwenkleren opgehangen in de boom. Als je dat hebt gezien heb je met niemand meer medelijden. Blom geeft toe dat hij dingen heeft gedaan die misschien niet door de beugel kunnen. In het kamp van de Nederlanders loopt een doofstomme Afghaan rond die op zoek is naar zijn broer. In een prachtige mimescène speelt hij de martelingen die de gevangenen ondergaan.
De Nederlandse officier is een schoolvoorbeeld van wat de Canadese schrijver Michael Ignatieff de verleiding van morele afkeer noemt. Juist mensen die met idealistische motieven naar verre oorden trekken, zijn vatbaar voor deze morele afkeer. Ignatieff illustreert het mechanisme aan de hand van Kurtz, de hoofdpersoon uit de roman Heart of Darkness van Joseph Conrad. Naast de jacht op ivoor is Kurtz ook van plan om de wilden in Congo te beschaven. Maar als hij er niet in slaagt om de zwarten te verheffen, keert hij zich met de kracht van al zijn frustratie tegen hen. Op het einde van zijn leven, schrijft hij in delirium in de kantlijn van zijn eindrapport voor de ‘Internationale Stichting ter Bestrijding van Onbeschaafde Gebruiken’: ‘Kill the brutes.’Het is een fenomeen dat soms ook optreedt bij ontwikkelingswerkers die bijna racistisch worden. Zij hebben uit alle macht geprobeerd die arme Afrikanen te helpen en wat doen die zwarten? Zijn ze dankbaar? Niks daarvan. Ze maken alles kapot wat de ontwikkelingswerkers proberen op te bouwen. Het is stank voor dank. Laat ze dan maar in hun eigen sop gaar koken. Je moet geen mensen helpen die niet geholpen willen worden.
In zowel het voormalige Joegoslavië als Rwanda is het westen volgens Ignatieff ten prooi gevallen aan de verleiding van morele afkeer. Met dat ene zinnetje over het verdampte medelijden heeft Eric de Vroedt, de schrijver en regisseur van Mighty Society 6 dit nihilisme knap weergegeven.
Tegenover de cynische officier plaatst De Vroedt Kurt Prins, de commandant van de Nederlandse troepen. Hij pijnigt zichzelf met zijn twijfels en wanhoop. Als een lid van de Koninklijke Marechaussee, zelf van Afghaanse afkomst, een onderzoek komt instellen naar de handelswijze van het Nederlandse leger, vraagt hij hem hoe vrij hij is. Het lijkt een doorzichtige poging om zijn eigen verantwoordelijkheid voor de gang van zaken te verdoezelen. Maar niets is minder waar. Prins wil weten op welk punt de geschiedenis een andere loop had kunnen krijgen. “Oorlog kiezen we niet. Oorlog breekt uit.” De logica van het conflict dwingt zich aan je op. En dus is zijn vraag essentieel. Hoe kan je voorkomen dat elke geweldsdaad een even hopeloze tegenreactie oproept? Om de spiraal te doorbreken, neemt hij een onorthodox besluit. Hij weigert de lijken van de Nederlandse soldaten naar beneden te halen en te begraven.Hoe meer de lijken rotten, hoe meer de vogels de oogkassen leegeten en de maden in de wonden kruipen, hoe meer ze een appèl doen aan de daders om tot inkeer te komen. Als de cynische officier vraagt wat in hemelsnaam het beoogde doel is van deze strategie antwoordt Prins dat hij wil dat recht zegeviert. Het is de machtsaanspraak van de masochist. Het is alsof de hoogste militair zich bekeert tot de strategie van Jezus. Niet terugslaan, maar de andere wang aanbieden. Juist omdat hij iets doet wat niemand van hem kan vragen, hoopt hij dat de vijand tot inkeer komt. Hij wil dat iemand breekt.
Het is een absurde strategie. Afghanistan is geen land van gevoelige geesten. Het is een land waarin, zoals de Afghaanse minnares van Kurt Prins het zo treffend zegt, elke droom wordt weggeblazen door de nachtmerries van gisteren. “Ik woonde in een land waar leven verboden was.” En toch vroeg ik me onwillekeurig af hoe Israel zou reageren als de Palestijnen zouden weigeren om de lijken van de vrouwen en kinderen in Gaza weg te halen. Zouden de Israëlische soldaten uit hun tank klimmen om de lijken op hun brancards te laden? Voor de cynische Jan Blom is de weigering de lijken te begraven, het ultieme bewijs dat Prins niet weet wat oorlogvoeren is. Op het slagveld is geen plaats voor twijfelaars. Hij verwijt Prins en indirect ook de politici die het besluit tot een vredesmissie hebben genomen, dat ze het lef niet hebben om echt oorlog te voeren. In zijn optiek kan je alleen winnen als je je scrupules laat varen. De vijand komt in deze logica alleen tot inkeer door keihard terug te slaan. Het klinkt bekend, maar is in wezen even absurd. De eigen vrijheid wordt ingeruild tegen de noodzaak om elke misdaad van de vijand met gelijke munt terug te betalen. Het levert een onstuitbare geweldsspiraal op. Met elke militaire strafexercitie tegen terreur worden nieuwe terroristen geboren, die bereid zijn om hun leven te geven om Israeli’s, Amerikanen of Nederlanders te doden.
Met Mighty Society 6 schreef de Vroedt een intrigerende verhandeling over oorlog en vredesmissies. Wie vecht krijgt vuile handen, maar wie wegloopt eigenlijk ook. Dan ben je een moderne Kurtz en laat je ‘de wilden’ elkaar afslachten en ontneem je hun vrouwen elke kans op een beter leven. Met al zijn verwijzingen naar werkelijke gebeurtenissen is het ook een feest voor de krantenlezer. Kurt Prins zegt op een gegeven moment dat hij gewoon een pianospeler is. Karremans nam dezelfde woorden in de mond toen hij na de val van Srebrenica moest onderhandelen met Mladic. “Don’t kill the pianoplayer” zei hij tegen de Servische generaal. Zelfs de naam van Jan Blom verwijst naar de werkelijkheid. Jan Blom was de Nederlandse militair die tijdens de oorlog in Irak opeens opdook in een persconferentie van het Amerikaanse leger als onderdeel van de coalition of the willing. Ik vroeg me wel of hoe de echte Jan Blom het zou vinden dat hij hier wordt afgeschilderd als een martelende nihilist? Mag je een bestaande soldaat in je stuk opvoeren als een oorlogsmisdadiger?
De Vroedt wil de toeschouwer aan het denken zetten. Soms offert hij zelfs de geloofwaardigheid van zijn personages op aan de kracht van de verhandeling, want waar vind je soldaten die zoveel praten en filosoferen? Dat schept afstand. Toch overtuigt de wanhoop van Prins. Op het einde van het stuk herhaalt hij nog eenmaal: ‘Ik wil dat er iemand breekt.” De kijker weet wie er gebroken is. Zijn buitenissige strategie om de vijand op andere gedachten te brengen, komt voort uit zijn koppige weigering om de ergste waarheid onder ogen te zien. Hij weet genoeg om te weten dat hij niets meer wil weten. Hij doet wat we allemaal willen doen als het onverkwikkelijk wordt, namelijk doen alsof al die ellende niet bestaat. Daarmee is mighty Society6 een krachtige aanklacht tegen het wegkijken.
