Wat heb je 10.000 uur gedaan? Ik ben een carrière-switcher. Sinds 2002 ben ik schrijver. Daarvoor was ik jurist. In beide beroepen dat aantal uur niet gehaald. Mensen observeren, dat heb ik eindeloos veel gedaan. Dat doe ik al sinds ik een klein stil meisje ben. Ik zie dingen die andere mensen niet zien. Ik hoor een tweede en soms een derde laag in een alledaagse dialoog. Zie het als een vorm van research. Ik kijk liever naar een gezelschap dan dat ik eraan deelneem. Ik hou niet van borrels en feesten. Ik ben twee keer naar het boekenbal geweest, maar dan moet ik voor twaalf uur weg anders verander ik in een pompoen. Goede schrijvers zijn vaak introverte mensen. Schrijven is deelnemen achteraf. Het is een vorm van expressie die me past. Zingen is een veel naaktere expressie. Bij schrijven kan je heel lang nadenken over wat je wilt zeggen. Ben je een product van je jeugd? Ik ben mijn opvoeding aan het herontdekken. Mijn ouders komen uit Pakistan. Mijn vader is conservatief. Ik lijk op hem. Hij is een ontdekker en heeft iets rusteloos. In Engeland was hij postbeambte. In Nederland startte hij een eigen bedrijf. Ik heb veel moeten overwinnen. Als Pakistaans meisje heb je veel piëteit voor ouderen en mannen. Je zoekt nooit de blik van een ander. Pakistaanse vrouwen geven een hele slappe hand. Ik heb moeten leren om een stevige handdruk te geven. Maar mijn meertaligheid en oog voor hiërarchie heeft me ook geholpen bij mijn werk bij internationale organisaties. Als je baas een Mont Blanc pen heeft, moet je niet ook een Mont Blanc pen kopen. Maar ik zie nu dat die betrokkenheid van de familie ook iets moois heeft. In het westen is iedereen tegen wil en dank een autodidact op het gebied van de liefde en partnerkeuze. Een beetje hulp is zo gek nog niet. Heb je als schrijver voordeel van je afkomst? Romans over migratie zijn aantrekkelijk omdat ze in uitvergrote vorm laten zien wat we allemaal meemaken. Wij reizen allemaal en komen los van onze jeugd. De migrant doet dat in het kwadraat. Ik zie schrijven als een maatschappelijke plicht. Ik ben ermee begonnen omdat ik me niet kon vinden in de kritiek op de islam en evenmin in de mensen die de islam prachtig vonden. Ik wil een ander geluid laten horen. Ik ben een schrijver die steeds hetzelfde boek schrijft, maar telkens in een andere vorm. Het gaat over het verlangen ergens bij te horen. Maar sommige variaties kan ik nu nog niet schrijven. Liefde is voor mij het moeilijkste onderwerp. Liefde is niet te vatten. Misschien lukt het als ik wat ouder ben. Zonder mazzel geen succes, wanneer heb jij geluk gehad? Ik vind dat ik heel hard heb gewerkt. Als jurist heb ik nauwelijks vakantie opgenomen en nu als schrijver werk ik ook hard. Ik heb wel eens hulp gehad, maar dat is toeval dat je aantrekt. Geluk kan je een duwtje geven, meer niet. Wat was je gelukkigste mislukking? Ik zou medicijnen gaan studeren. Mijn ouders wilde dat ik dat deed en ik was gehoorzaam. Bij een open dag in Nijmegen lag in een lokaal een dood opengesneden biggetje. Oh my goodness. Dat was een excuus om geen medicijnen te gaan studeren: “Pap, ik moet daar in onrein vlees snijden!” Zonder dat biggetje was ik medicijnen gaan studeren en geen rechten. Van welke fout heb je het meest geleerd? Van het ouders-dochter conflict. Ik ben op mijn zesentwintigste bijna uitgehuwelijkt aan een man in Pakistan en heb de fout gemaakt om daar te rigoreus mee te breken. Ik heb mijn ouders gekwetst. Ik wou dat ik de verloving op een andere manier ongedaan had gemaakt. Het heeft me geleerd over de eerste generatie. Ze krijgen klappen van beide kanten. Ze hebben kansen gekregen, maar zijn ook snel afgeschreven. Wij van de tweede generatie spreken de taal. We hebben een dubbele antenne. Door de Nederlandse samenleving en de publieke opinie worden we aangemoedigd in ons individualisme. We voelen ons hoogmoedig waardoor je klappen gaat uidelen aan de wereld van je ouders. Ik had gewild dat ik geduldiger was geweest. Standvastig en geduldig. Ik ben best aardig persoon, maar er is niemand die we zoveel pijn doen als onze ouders. Misschien schrijf ik om daar uit te komen. Huwelijksvorming wordt de crux van de integratie. Het is de heilige wet dat moslims niet mogen trouwen met niet-moslims. Veel meisjes zitten in een vergelijkbare situatie als ik destijds. Turkse meisjes misschien meer dan Marokkaanse meisjes. Die lijken meer op Nederlanders. Ze zijn grof gebekt, ook tegen hun vaders. We moeten goed beseffen wat we doen als we jongeren aanmoedigen om te breken met hun ouderlijk milieu. Dan zadelen we ouders op met pijn en jongeren met een schuldgevoel.
