Ramsey Nasr is acteur, schrijver en dichter des vaderlands.
Wat heb jij 10.000 uur gedaan? Als je iets pas goed kan als je het tienduizend uur hebt geoefend, zijn er geen goede dichters. Met acteren haal ik het wel. Dat doe ik non-stop sinds ik een peuter ben. Ik acteer al 33 jaar. Spelen is niks anders dan bewust je gedrag sturen. Iedereen speelt. Wanneer heb je je talent ontdekt? Op mijn middelbare school waren er bullebakken die brugklassers vernederden. Ik heb toen in de schoolkrant een Van Boer tot Stoer cursus geschreven. Door die publicatie werden zij de risee van de school. Toen besefte ik de kracht van taal. Ben je een product van je jeugd? Volgens mijn vader heb ik zijn avontuurlijkheid en zijn gevoel voor onrecht. Ik vind hem veel avontuurlijker dan ik. Hij is Palestijn. Hij heeft prachtverhalen over zijn jeugd. Hij heeft nog als kleine jongen bommen uit de eerste wereldoorlog helpen demonteren. Hij is de wereld over gezworven. Hij studeerde in Joegoslavië en is op vakantie in Rotterdam mijn moeder tegen het lijf gelopen. Mijn moeder vindt dat ik haar gevoeligheid heb. Mijn moeder is hypersensitief. Ze neemt spanningen over van anderen. Ik vind soms dat ik niet gevoelig genoeg ben. Dan gebeurt er iets vreselijks met de wereld of met vrienden en dan ben ik twee uur later met mijn gedachten alweer elders. Geen succes zonder mazzel, wanneer heb je mazzel gehad? Ik kan niet één moment bedenken, omdat alles in zekere zin toeval is. Je kunt het toeval proberen te sturen, zoals je ook inspiratie kunt afdwingen. Ken je nog de Willem Ruis Show. Dan moest een kandidaat stokken grijpen die onverwacht naar beneden vielen. Mensen werden gek van de stokken die ze lieten vallen. Ik ben iemand die één stok vangt en dan roept: ik heb gewonnen! Ik wil niet weten wat ik misloop. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld een gedicht geschreven voor de Universiteit van Antwerpen. Een dame die daar werkte vroeg me of ik mee wilde op een expeditie naar Spitsbergen. Zo ging ik mee op een reis naar de Noordpool. Met twee geweren op zak voor de ijsberen. Een jaar daarna mocht ik mee naar Tanzania. Dat is een televisieprogramma geworden en heeft een boek opgeleverd Homo Safaricus. Wat ben je niet geworden? Pianist. De tienduizend uur oefenen om muzikant te worden heb ik nooit gehaald. Ik kom niet uit een buitengewoon cultureel gezin dat elke week naar een museum ging. Mijn moeder luistert wel naar klassieke muziek. Mijn ouders zijn alleen geen fanaten. Ik heb altijd getekend. Ik wilde striptekenaar worden. Tot ik in het derde jaar van de middelbare school meedeed aan het schooltoneelstuk. Ik heb daarna nooit meer getekend. Wat was je beste nee? Onlangs ben ik gevraagd om hier in Vlaanderen een erg populair televisieprogramma te presenteren. Als ik sluw in elkaar zou zitten zou ik het hebben gedaan. Als je zoiets een paar jaar doet worden je boeken vanzelf bestsellers. Maar ik heb nee gezegd. Ik wil niet gaan presenteren om te bewijzen dat ik dat ook kan. Heb je wel eens ‘nee’ gezegd waarvan je spijt hebt gekregen? Paul Verhoeven kwam casten voor Zwartboek. Ik kreeg ook een uitnodiging voor een auditie. Ik had gepland om in de tijd van de filmopnames aan mijn roman te werken. Dus ben ik niet gegaan. Mijn vrienden hebben me voor gek verklaard: “Als je auditie doet heeft hij je in ieder geval gezien. Misschien levert dat in de toekomst een rol op.” Zo denk ik niet. Ik plan mijn carrière niet. Ik wil in het hier en nu leven. Ik ben nu vier jaar dichter des vaderlands. Daar geef ik me aan over. Als stadsdichter van Antwerpen deed ik dat ook, zo kwam ik op plekken waar ik anders nooit zou zijn geweest. Heb jij ooit een kruiwagen gehad? Constant. Alle mensen die je helpen in het leven zijn kruiwagens. Een commissie nomineert je voor de dichter des vaderlands. Vervolgens stemmen allerlei mensen op je. Dat zijn allemaal kruiwagens. Maar kruiwagen is een heel verkeerd woord. Het klinkt alsof mensen instrumenten zijn die jij gebruikt. Trouwens, zelfs de naam die je hebt opgebouwd kan een kruiwagen vormen. Ben je een kind van jouw tijd? Mijn eerste dichtbundel was een statement tegen de postmoderne geest. Ik wilde dat gedichten niet alleen maar een taalspel zijn. Ze moesten ergens over gaan. Het stadsdichterschap van Antwerpen heeft me verder gesterkt in die mening, evenals mijn huidige titel van dichter des vaderlands. Gedichten kunnen betekenis hebben. Ook maatschappelijk. Heb jij wel eens je eigen talent verraden? Ik probeer van commercie weg te blijven. Ik heb nog niets gedaan, waarvan ik denk dat had ik niet moeten doen. Onlangs ben ik gekozen door lezeressen van de Elle tot de meest sexy man van België. Dat is totaal mijn wereld niet. Toch ben ik trots die prijs gaan ophalen. Ik vond het mooi dat de lezeressen van de Elle op een dichter stemmen – die dan nog niet eens Belg is. Heb je een intern tribunaal? Mensen wiens oordeel in je achterhoofd spookt? Die kies ik per keer. Toen ik een gedicht moest schrijven voor de verkiezing van dichter des vaderlands heb ik drie mensen gebeld: een meisje dat ik niet meer zie, mijn oude redacteur als stadsdichter en mijn huidige redacteur. Soms heb je iemand nodig die commentaar geeft om je bewust te maken van wat je hebt geschreven. Had ik anderen gebeld, dan was het waarschijnlijk een ander gedicht geworden. Wat is het beste advies dat je ooit hebt gekregen? Een docent op de toneelacademie zei me eens: “Wat je doet moet ongepermitteerd zijn. Je moet dingen onnodig durven door te trekken.” Dat houdt voor mij verband met wat de striptekenaar van Olivier Blunder zei: “Een grap één keer maken is leuk.
