Intermediair 24-02-2009 'De verwachting is dat kanker binnen enkele jaren een chronische ziekte zal zijn?' Het leek te mooi om waar te zijn, en waar was het dan ook niet. Op 3 februari stond nog in de kranten dat kanker tegenwoordig de meest voorkomende doodsoorzaak was. Een dag later, op wereldkankerdag, berichtte het Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) dat diezelfde kwaal over een aantal jaren slechts een chronische ziekte zal zijn. Enkele kranten namen het bericht over. ‘Dit betekent', zo voegde de verslaggever van het ANP er ten overvloede aan toe, ‘dat mensen er niet meer aan zullen doodgaan.' Het leek het alsof het eeuwige leven zich aandiende.

En we hopen dat u ons gaat helpen zoeken naar berichten en uitspraken die te mooi, of te onwaarschijnlijk, zijn om waar te zijn. In dit geval hoefden we overigens niet meer te doen dan het persbericht op te vragen van KWF Kankerbestrijding op basis waarvan het bericht is geschreven. Daarin staat geen letter over het verdwijnen van de kanker, en dat moet ook het ANP hebben gevonden die de fout in het bericht nimmer rectificeerde Google en de opwarming van de aarde Een even opwindend bericht was dat over de vermeende CO2-uitstoot van de zoekmachine Google. Twee zoekinstructies zouden voor net zo veel uistoot zorgen als het koken van een pannetje water. Het NRC Handelsblad van 12 januari en een aantal nieuwssites wisten wel raad met dit nieuws. De site van De Telegraaf legde een koppeling met het klimaatprobleem. ‘Nooit meer schaatsen door Google!' Op de weblog van vierdejaarsstudenten van de Fontys Hogeschool Journalistiek in Tilburg is al korte metten met het bericht gemaakt. Het bericht bleek het gevolg van twee journalisten van The Sunday Times die er naar aanleiding van een Harvard-onderzoek flink op los hadden geïnterpreteerd.
Een goede jager gaat op zoek naar de plaatsen waar en de tijdstippen om het wild te kunnen aantreffen. Als onzinjagers gaan wij hetzelfde doen. Zo letten wij vooral op berichten waarin mensen feiten presenteren waar ze belang bij hebben. Als we lezen dat de vliegtaks banen op Schiphol kost, zijn we dus op ons hoede. Is het waar? Of is het nieuws in de wereld gebracht als onderdeel van een lobby van de luchtvaartsector? Met een zelfde argwaan zouden we Ivo Opstelten hebben benaderd toen hij bij zijn afscheid als burgemeester van Rotterdam beweerde dat de havenstad sinds zijn aantreden veiliger is geworden. Is dat echt zo? (De criminaliteit nam af: dat is echter niet hetzelfde als veiliger.) En in hoeverre kan hij de claimen dat zijn aanwezigheid daar iets mee te maken heeft? (Ook in andere steden daalde in die periode de criminaliteit.) Een ander moment van argwaan is wanneer de journalist zijn verhaal baseert op één enkele bron, zoals bij het bericht over Google. gezellige ex-rokers Of als berichten naadloos aansluiten bij een heersende trend. Die worden vaak net iets te achteloos in de krant gekwakt. Een mooi voorbeeld was een onder andere door de Volkskrant overgenomen ANP-bericht van 24 november vorig jaar waarin stond dat een meerderheid van ex-rokers het sinds het rookverbod ongezelliger vond in het café. Het paste in een nieuwsstroom over toenemend verzet tegen het beleid van minister Klink. Maar verwonderlijk vonden we het wel, want alle ex-rokers in onze vriendenkring zijn fanatieke antirokers. Het bleek uiteindelijk om een onderzoek te gaan dat nauwelijks representatief was en waarin niet de ex-rokers, maar de niet-rokers waren ondervraagd. Slechts 35 procent van die groep vond het ongezelliger in het café. 45 Procent juist gezelliger. Uw hulp Nogmaals: we hebben uw hulp nodig. Wordt wakker als u weer eens een bericht leest over de (on)deugdelijkheid van crèches, sinaasappels die kankerverwekkend zijn, of bestuurders die op dubieuze gronden succes claimen.
