Geld is vandaag de dag de enige graadmeter voor succes, meent de socioloog Dick Pels. In zijn nieuwste boek breekt hij een lans voor presteren om de eer, in plaats van om het hoogste salaris. De man van 81 miljoen Jeroen Brouwers is de levende illustratie van het failliet van eerbewijzen. De schrijver weigerde onlangs de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren omdat hij het prijzengeld van 16.000 euro ‘een aanfluiting’ vindt. Het bedrag was immers veel lager dan de 50.000 euro van de AKO-literatuurprijs of de 60.000 euro van de P.C. Hooftprijs. Wie kan dan nog volhouden dat de Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren de belangrijkste literaire prijs is? Brouwers betoonde zich daarmee een kind van deze tijd. Volgens de socioloog Dick Pels zien we vandaag de dag geld als enige graadmeter van succes. In de Economie van de Eer. Een nieuwe visie op verdienste en beloning schrijft hij dat de enige waarde die we nog erkennen de marktwaarde is. De enige concurrentie die we nog begrijpen is de concurrentie om het hoogste salaris of de grootste winst. Aan de ene kant leidt dat tot een graaicultuur. Jan Bennink van Numico kreeg als beloning voor de overname van zijn bedrijf 81 miljoen euro. En hij vindt het nog verdiend ook! Aan de andere kant voelen mensen die arm zijn zich letterlijk waardeloos. Dat komt omdat we in een meritocratie leven. Maatschappelijke posities worden niet verdeeld op basis van afkomst of privileges, maar op basis van talent en verdienste. Boer je goed, dan is dat je eigen verdienste, boer je slecht dan is dat je eigen schuld. De winnaar krijgt alles In een meritocratie horen mensen loon naar werken te krijgen. Maar niets is minder waar. Ook falende managers krijgen een gouden handdruk mee. Het gaat er niet om hoe goed je bent, maar waar je mee weg kan komen. De exorbitante salarissen weerspiegelen niet verdienste, maar een logica van de winner takes all. De kampioen is misschien maar een fractie sneller dan de nummer twee, maar hij krijgt de gouden plak en de sponsorcontracten. De nummer twee is de eerste verliezer. De logica van de sport geldt op steeds meer terreinen. Daarom kunnen de top ceo’s en de bekendste presentatoren of artiesten zulke gigantische bedragen incasseren terwijl ze niet tien keer zo goed zijn als een minder succesvolle collega. Pels laat ook overtuigend zien dat de meritocratie een individualistische ideologie is. Het miskent hoezeer de kansen van mensen nog steeds bepaald worden door waar hun wieg staat en hoezeer ze voor hun succes van anderen afhankelijk zijn. niet hebzucht, maar eerzucht Het probleem van loon naar werken is dat we niet goed weten wat iemand waard is. Kan je verdienste afmeten aan diploma’s, aan succes in de media of aan succes op de markt? Pels constateert dat steeds vaker roem en geld de enige maatstaven van succes zijn. En die twee versterken elkaar. Wie beroemd is, wordt rijk en wie rijk is, wordt beroemd. Tegenover deze roemzucht en hebzucht, plaatst Pels de eerzucht. Mensen hunkeren naar erkenning en daar is niks mis mee. Ook managers hunkeren naar erkenning, maar de enige erkenning die ze herkennen is geld. Daarom willen ze meer verdienen dan andere managers. Pels wil dat grootverdieners met minder geld genoegen nemen en meer strijden om de eer, zoals een wetenschapper ook de waardering van collega’s belangrijker vindt dan het hoogste salaris en een politicus ernaar streeft om geschiedenis te schrijven. Hij pleit voor eer naar werken. Het mooie van zijn pleidooi is dat hij tegenover hebzucht niet altruïsme plaatst, maar een sociaal egoïsme. Voor eer en faam ben je immers altijd afhankelijk van anderen. Het is alleen jammer dat hij zich vervolgens meer opstelt als een moralist dan als een socioloog. Hij denkt dat een moreel appèl de wereld zal veranderen. Machthebbers stellen altijd dat zij verdienen wat ze krijgen. Pels wil die vanzelfsprekendheid doorbreken door een publiek debat over wat welk werk waard is. Daarbij hoort ook schande spreken over zakkenvullers aan de top en onderbetaling van waardevol werk, zoals in de zorg. Beroemd in een niche In plaats van al zijn kaarten te zetten op het publieke debat, had Pels ook kunnen kijken naar maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen die het monopolie van geld en roem doorbreken. Mediaroem verkruimelt bijvoorbeeld als er honderd televisiekanalen zijn en elke niche, elke subcultuur zijn eigen helden heeft. Hoe sterker mensen hunkeren naar de erkenning van een specifieke gemeenschap van een beroepsgroep, van de buurt of van een vereniging, hoe minder ze hun succes afmeten aan geld. Het zijn sociologische aangrijpingspunten voor een maatschappijverandering. Maar succes is niet verzekerd. Kijk maar naar Jeroen Brouwers.
