Sinds de jaren zestig en zeventig is het stereotype beeld van jongeren dat ze boos zijn, opstandig en overtuigd van het eigen gelijk. De generatie 70/80 (geboren tussen 1970 en 1990, de twintigers en dertigers van vandaag) breekt radicaal met dat sjabloon.
De journalisten en publicisten die het woord voeren in de bundel Moralitijd. Nieuwe generatie, nieuwe moraal zijn eerder bedaagd dan opstandig. Ze winden zich niet op, maar verwonderen zich. Ze zijn niet overtuigd van het eigen gelijk, maar verbazen zich over mensen die in staat zijn om “zwart-wit te denken waar duizenden kleuren zijn.” Het zijn geen schrijvers die op de barricades klimmen, maar denkers die bij de wereld willen stilstaan. Holocaust-erosie De bundel komt voort uit een programmaserie van De Balie waarin een nieuwe generatie op zoek ging naar een nieuwe moraal. Voor een vorige generatie was de Tweede Wereldoorlog nog het absolute ijkpunt voor goed en kwaad. Een enkele verwijzing naar de Holocaust was genoeg om een discussie over bijvoorbeeld de identificatieplicht lam te leggen. Maar volgens Sanderijn Cels en Menno van der Veen is het argument te vaak misbruikt en daarom uitgewerkt. Er is sprake van Holocaust-erosie. Dus was de vraag aan de jonge auteurs: Wat is het nieuwe morele ijkpunt? Cum grano salis Nieuwe morele ijkpunten hebben de auteurs niet gevonden. De bundel is eerder een onderzoek naar een leven zonder eenduidige ijkpunten. Voor de generatie 70-80 is scepsis de natuurlijke houding. Typerend is dat, zoals Rindert de Groot opmerkt, het motto van de Lowlands Universiteit is Cum Grano Salis (Met een korreltje zout). Ze zijn opgegroeid in een mediatijdperk waarin ze gewend zijn dat alle beelden zijn geconstrueerd en gemanipuleerd. De beelden van het concentratiekamp in het voormalige Joegoslavië bleken even nep als het bewijs van de massavernietigingswapens in Irak. “Zodra er een camera snort, begint het acteren,” schrijft Auke Hulst. “Om overtuigd te raken heb ik beelden nodig die ik kan vertrouwen.” En omdat die er niet zijn gaat de opwinding over onrecht nooit diep. Relativisme ligt op de loer. Iedereen heeft zijn eigen verhaal. Iedereen heeft zijn eigen waarheid. Een kant kiezen is je ogen sluiten voor de helft van de werkelijkheid. De generatie 70-80 wil kwesties juist van alle kanten bekijken. Vrijheid van meningsuiting is daarom zo’n beetje de laatste waarde die heilig is. “Zeggen wat je denkt is goed.” Maar nog beter is het als mensen zich ook verplaatsen in de standpunten van anderen. Het hoogste ideaal is een beschaafde conversatie. Zo’n conversatie is alleen mogelijk als deelnemers zowel op zoek gaan naar de overeenkomsten als naar de verschillen. Typerend is ook dat ze niet breken met tradities. Asis Aynan houdt juist een literair pleidooi om meer kennis te nemen van de tradities van het land van herkomst van zijn ouders. Idealisten bij de kassa De generatie 70-80 heeft voor iedereen begrip, maar zeker ook voor de eigen zwaktes. Je kunt wel allerlei hoge idealen hebben, maar zoals Evert Nieuwenhuis schrijft, “hoe strenger het dieet, hoe korter je het volhoudt.” Het idealisme van zijn generatie, dat zich richt op een eerlijke globalisering, is dan ook eerder een praktisch idealisme dan een radicaal idealisme. Geen ruiten ingooien bij Nike, maar geen Nike meer kopen als die schoenen worden gemaakt met kinderarbeid. Het gaat er niet om je leven te wijden aan het ideaal, maar om je ideaal een plek te geven in je leven. Wat kan jij aan de kassa of op je werk doen om een verschil te maken? Zijn generatiegenoten zijn niet meer bereid om het goede leven op te geven voor het goede doel. “Het beste wat we konden doen is funshoppen verruilen voor fairshoppen.” Dat is een bescheiden doelstelling. Eigenlijk mogen jongeren wat Nieuwenhuis betreft best wel wat ambitieuzer zijn, maar misschien houden ze het juist door die bescheidenheid beter vol dan de babyboomers die massaal van hun idealistische geloof zijn gevallen. Volgens samenstellers Sarah Meuleman en Menno van der Veen accepteert de generatie 70/80 in grote lijnen de bestaande politieke orde. Over de waarde van de liberale democratische rechtsstaat bestaat grote consensus. Moraal is daarom niet iets van grote woorden, maar eerder een kwestie van smaak. Opvattingen staan ook niet voor eeuwig vast. Volgens de samenstellers is het gevaar van deze dragelijke lichtheid van het bestaan wel dat deze generatie zich laat leiden door de waan van de dag. Een ander gevaar is dat ze met lege handen staan tegenover fundamentalisten van welk soort dan ook die menen de waarheid in pacht te hebben. Overdreven mondigheid De auteurs van Moralitijd passen met hun bedachtzaamheid niet bij het stereotype beeld van jongeren. Maar misschien is dat precies hun manier om zich af te zetten tegen vorige generaties. Het mooiste verhaal in de bundel is van Pieter van Os. Hij schrijft over John R., de man die de Rembrandttoren gijzelde uit protest tegen de invoering van breedbeeldtelevisie en uiteindelijk zelfmoord pleegde. Voor Van Os is John R. een uitvergroting van de tijdgeest. De assertiviteitscultus en de overdreven mondigheid leidt tot benadelingswaanzinnigen als John R. Over de kleinste krenking maken mensen een misbaar die niet in verhouding staat tot het ervaren onrecht. John R. lijkt in die zin op de opperpriester van het Grote Ongenoegen Pieter Storms. Hij schreeuwt ook moord en brand over kleine consumentenkwesties. Waar Storms zich ziet als een dappere strijder tegenover de arrogantie van de macht bepleit Van Os een deemoedige houding. Hij wil af van het luidruchtige tamboereren op de eigen rechten en het eigen gelijk. Soms zit het tegen. Accepteer dat gewoon. Het is heel vermoeiend om altijd en overal op je strepen te staan. “Met de hakken permanent diep in het zand is het moeilijk lopen. Laat staan dansen.” De mildheid en de bedachtzaamheid van de generatie 70-80 is zo een stil protest tegen het schreeuwerige gelijk van de vorige generatie. “Misschien dat deze generatie, mijn generatie, tegen de stroom van de Nederlanders die werden geboren in de jaren veertig, vijftig en zestig, eens vaker ‘ja’ zeggen. Minder ‘nee’en ‘ja maar’.” Eigenlijk zegt Van Os daarmee: De generatie 70-80 is niet bedaagd geboren, ze zijn bedaagd gemaakt door hun afschuw van de schreeuwerige, assertieve, gelijkhebberige babyboomers.
